I certainly didn't mind them, but do remember at least one poster here
who objected to them. I suppose some people prefer being touched up...

Count me in that number. I am not about to get zapped with backscatter
X-rays.

Skin cancer is the high-profile risk. I have a more immediate one:
I have morphoea (do a Google image search; mine is more widespread
over the body than any case I can find a picture of that way, but
not particularly deep). One of the few things known to set it off is
radiotherapy. For such a rare disease nobody will ever investigate
the implications of airport scanner radiation. I am not willing to
experiment with anything that might make it worse.

I remember reading about these being implemented ages ago. I'm definitely not a fan. Does anyone know which airports are currently using them in the UK?

Schiphol has a type of body scanner, like Manchester/Heathrow, you need
to assume the position and the machine rotates around you, however, it
does not show a 'naked' image like the Manchester/Heathrow scanners, it
shows an androgynous human image with a small yellow square on areas
the system has flagged up. Anyone can see this image, and I took a look
myself as I was passing through, every single one of the buttons on the
nine pockets of my jeans plus fly had set it off and I was duly called
over to be wanded down and my pockets searched.

Went through it only last week.

This sounds like a step in the right direction, in terms of privacy. I
have heard reports of American airports moving toward this millimeter
wavelength radio frequency approach.

I still don't like the idea of getting microwaved, though.

Does your dermotologist have any information on the radio frequency
scanners that are oftentime replacing the x-ray scanners? They only
cook you skin-deep!

And the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) agents are no good
for information. They robotically tell me the RF machines don't emit
radiation! Come on.

My own doctor does not know of enough research to draw conclusions on
the MMW RF scanners, maybe yours does?

Dunno how well-trained your TSA people are in the UK, but here in the
U.S. the only job requirement is a warm body - a brain is optional!
