Local city buses tend to be overcrowded and relatively difficult to use. Subways are fine. Taxis are fine if you have the destination written in Chinese or can speak the language. Long distance buses and airplanes are fine. Trains are fine, getting the tickets is sometimes a challenge. For tourist destinations in the area of cities, it's usually possible to hire a car and driver or take a tour at a rather reasonable cost. Walking is often a nice alternative within city areas- even in cities with populations approaching 10,000,000, the interesting area inside the city may only be a few km across.
