I stay at a nice little hotel in Beijing for $43USD a night. However,
during the Olympics, they have raised their rates ten times to $430USD a
night. The greed of the Chinese is amazing! It is also showing up in the
price for

But no different to the Athenians, or the Muncheners during Oktoberfest. It
is a normal function of hotel operators to do this.

their products. As an importer who does a lot of business with China, I am
beginning to abandon the practice. I can now buy many items cheaper in
EUROPE!

Many Chinese factories now run at a loss because their costs have gone up,
but they have been frightened about increasing prices for fear of losing the
business. If your prices have gone up, it really is because it is costing
them more

Wake up Chinese! You will LOSE the American market if you don't stop your
greed!

I don't think that you can accuse them of being greedy, they won the
business in the first place by being seriously cheap. Even if prices triple
it will still be a fraction of the cost of doing the work in the US. I can
buy a shirt, shipped in from China, for 3 pounds including the retailers
profit. Before this was normal, a local made cheap shirt would have cost 15
pounds

Sounds like Crab season in San Francisco!!! Two weeks crabbing in San
Francisco Bay, $120,000.

This must be a really specialist market.

The number of people interested in such a passtime, who can afford that
much, let alone think it's VFM, must be tiny.

that's because poor chinese don't understand free markets. if they
set prices too high, demand dries up. then one week before the
olympics, they're going to have to drop prices to $1 to try and
attract some customers in a last desperate attempt. can you say
PRICELINE?

Our newspapers quoted a travel agent saying they advising their clients
not
to go to Beijing during the Olympics because the rooms are costing the
equivalent of CAD$1200 per night.

I remember people were able to camp for the Greek Olympics. But
camping is not really a Chinese (or Asian) activity, so I don't think
there are any campgrounds nearby. There'd be no cheap hotels within
100 mile radius of Beijing. There are other activities in other
cities (Shanghai, HK?), but again I think cheap and Olympics are two
opposite concepts.

i heard many chinese families are renting their apartments for
olympics month to westerners at a decent profit.

That too, but more memorably they rent out their daughters.

photos please

That has been done at all Olympics no matter where in the world.

I attended the Montreal Games in '76 and we rented a room in a nice
family's house at a very reasonable rate. It beat the overpriced
opportunist gouging by the Hotel industry.

I am surprised if it is allowed in communist China. Yep. Well, here is
an on-line ad. $300 US per night - 8 night minimum... These are

Yes, not bad, huh?? two week year, 50 week vacation or extra money to
take sight-seers out of the Bayarea cruises.
