One of the side trips I would like to do is Pompeii. I have
already been there but g/f would like to see. Most of the
tour places offer combo tours to see both Rome & Naples.
Are there any tour places that do just Pompeii and provide
transportation to Pompeii as well from Rome?

Check out www.viator.com which had all sorts of excursions
for a variety of destinations. you my be able to find a provider
for such a tour. =R=

Yes

We did it a few years back. The bus left early in the morning and got back
late at night. The tour included the usual cheap lunch and one stop to
buy(junkl) stuff. The trip back was really funny because some guys from
Ireland got the tour guide drunk. He was really a nice person, passed on a
lot of good information, repeated everything in three different languages
and told a lot of very funny jokes. After he got drunk the jokes got even
funner.

The other funny part of the tour was the drive through Naples. The tour
guide warned us in advance not to panic about the totally crazy drivers.
They triple parked in the middle of the street, a red light was considered a
"suggestion" to stop, cars kept cutting off the bus by a few inches, etc.
Advice to everyone ... do not drive through Naples.

Were in Italy for three weeks and only took a ROME city tour and the tour to
Pompeii. BTW, I think we gained 15 pounds, eventhough we spent all our time
walking.

I am sorry, but I can't remember the name of the tour company, but they have
been in business for something like 40 years. We found the brochure for the
tour at our little 2 start hotel.

I think the keys issues are ... good shoes ... lose weight before you go ...
stay flexible ... don't try to see everything ... do a lot of planing before
you go.

You might also consider just taking a train.

Let me know if you need any help with anything.

Man it is pretty far from Rome. And Pompeii is huge. It is between
Naples and Sorrento - maybe stay at one of those places for the night
before.

Is easy to do yourself. Take the Train to Naples and change to the
Circumvesuvius (sp?) and get off at Pompeii. Seems as if Naples was about 2
hours or less on the train, but will not guarantee that memory.

You can catch the Circumvesuviana in the lower level of the Naples Centrale
station. Get off at Pompei Scavi, not Pompei.

This is a long day, but you're in shape for it. You could even add in an
hour or so at the Archeological Museum in Naples, where many of the
treasures from Pompeii are displayed. Alas, the room with the mosaics was
closed the day we were there.

The OP is very likely home already.
He posted that question on Feb 26 and the Rome Marathon was on March
18.
