Reno -> San Francisco

Now to Roland's question: Your plans might be blown by snow as that's not a good time to be travelling up there. Our plan is to drive from Las Vegas to Reno on one day. I know this is a boring ride. We did it two years ago. So I know what it's like but we're not in a hurry. We don't wanna drive through Death Valley, Lee Vining and then straight north (sorry I don't know the street numbers right now). We think about taking the route via Beaty and all these small towns above. How about the snow conditions on this route? We will watch the weather channell, so there will be no problem to change the route if there is too much snow. It could turn out that you'll have lovely driving weather, so you might want to have one Tahoe-focused plan and one "get over the pass while it's open and then spend time in Grass Valley/Nevada City/Sacramento" plan, then choose the right one according to the conditions. Roland Schmidt wrote: Hi, we're doing a short trip to the USA at the end of November. Out trip starts in LA, goes over Las Vegas and Reno to San Francisco and back home. It's our 7th time in LA and Vegas. We also know the horror of miles between Las Vegas and Reno, but we don't know the area between Reno and SF above the highway which links both citys. We got three days for it (Reno - SF). Is there anything interesting to visit? How about Sacramento? Never been there. We also thought about staying a little longer in Reno for doing some day trips. There's no reason to stay in SF, because we've been in SF several times. So, is there a must see between Reno and SF. I know there is a Six Flags park :-). We like shopping, but we also like nature. All suggestions welcome. it'ds a 5 hour drive or so. Plenty to see and do. I'd recommend driving up to Truckee/tahoe. up to Sierra City and then down CA 49 to Auburn or even as far south as Yosemite before heading to SF. I'd give Sacramento the skip. |

It doesn;t really snow much in the leeside of the sierras but when it does, it could dump. |

On the Donner Pass (if it's open), the Rainbow Springs Lodge has great food & fun history/photos/etc. Don't miss Nevada City - totally charming & check out their website for dates of Victorian Christmas in Nevada City & Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley - both a lot of fun & on alternating weekends, I believe. We really like the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley - full of history - ask for the Ulysses Grant or the Mark Twain suite. Enjoy - just a great & beautiful area of California. |

Icono Clast said: The suggestion for Virginia City, for example, although a good one that I endorse might not be possible because of snow. that road is ploughed year around so unless it's snowing heavily, you can visit it. I have encountered the road closed. Perhaps they were among the rare exceptions. I've visited Virginia City many times and even once considered buying a casino there. I spent an entire day with the seller who showed me much about the operation and what he felt he had to do. I decided it was more work than I was willing to do. It would have been giving my life to the work so I remained, for my entire working life, an employee of others with a full life almost completely separate from my work. Are you thinking of Brodie? No. I cannot tell you how many times I've tried, but failed, to visit Brodie. The one time I succeeded was late in the day so it was a short, but well worth the while, visit. __________________________________________________ __________ A San Franciscan in (where else?)
