Default Is a convertible safe on Route 66

Hi

I've heard scare stories about it being a sensible precaution against
muggings to lock car doors and close windows when driving in the states. I
am planning to drive from Chicago to Santa Monica in a convertible in June
next year. Will that be safe ? What precautions should I take ?

Also anyone know of places in Chicago that I can hire a convertible other
then Hertz and Alamo ?
Also Is June a good time to go ? I like it sunny and warm.

Many thanks

Stay out of bad neighborhoods in city centres, the main
area I'd be concerned about is East St Louis but stick
to mainroads in daylight and you'll be fine.

Pass watch out for one way drop off charges and supplementary
liability insurance costs. I got a better deal booking from the
UK through holiday autos.

Definitely, thats when I went 5 years ago and it was
great.

I've been driving nothing but convertibles in the US since 1964, with nary a
single problem anywhere. The only thing you don't do is drive after dark with
the top down in questionable areas of large cities, which is simply common
sense.

Enjoy the trip!

I agree, but would add only one precaution: don't leave valuables in plain
view in the car (this is true of hard-tops as well as convertables).

Enjoy the trip!

sensible precaution against muggings

You should be fine if you take common-sense precautions
like not driving at night in bad urban areas.

But to cut the risk of theft, be sure the car is locked with
the top up when you park it, and keep any valuables in the
trunk where they are out of sight.

Your trip sounds like a lot of fun. Just be sure to have lots
of suntan lotion!

My practice has always been to leave convertible door UN-locked and
valuables in trunk. I hate having my top cut.....
