I confess that products such as gemstones and jewelry seem utterly
useless to me. I wouldn't be interested in them even if someone _paid
me_ to wear them.

Now the engineering applications of diamonds ... that's a different
story, and synthetic diamonds are going to change a lot of things. The
coolest thing is that we'll never run out of raw material for diamonds.
