What was the name of this US based and purchased (I'm assuming that's
what you meant) card then?

If I remembered, I would have suggested it to the original poster! It wasn't
my card.

It was available through a mainstream long-distance carrier, like MCI or
someone like that, and was linked to my friend's phone account--not a
prepaid card.

A pretty good deal, but I do not remember the details, sorry.

Well, I don't know how prevalent that is, but the fact remains that you
can buy cheap cards in France.

Cheapest cards are almost always available in country of originated
call. Only exception I have found is Egypt, where I have had great
difficulty finding cards.

As to your $0.03 french card. A name would be nice.

Italy cards are €0.05 at any tobacconist. only 25 digits to dial
before the number.

Huh? A telecard bought in France for calls 'within Europe' will usually
be just as cheap for calling the US. Using a US originating calling card
will usually be a very bad deal in comparison.

You are mistaken. I was traveling in France earlier this year with a friend
who had a card that permitted calls to the U.S. at (as I recall) less than 3
U.S. cents per minute. This was much better than the effective rate of the
French telecard.
