After much foot-dragging by me, Herself is to get her wish at last,
and we plan a break in Vienna later this year (November).

The flights are booked, and I have been researching accommodation
possibilities until my head is bursting. I reckon we should be able to
get 2 or 3 star standard, fairly central, buffet breakfast included,
for under €100 per night, perhaps as low as €80.

Essential: double room, clean, room to swing a cat, ensuite bathroom
(good shower preferred), reasonably quiet, good breakfast.
Near-essential: tea-making facilities, satellite TV.

My shortlist is:
Hotel Goldener Baer
City Hotel Deutschmeister
Hotel Gabriel
Lerner Pension
Pension City

I have trawled the r.t.e archives, read user reviews on tripadvisor
and venere, and found other bits and pieces to look at. At this stage,
I am suffering from information overload.

Can anybody cut through the fog and give me a reason to book one place
rather than any of the others?

Have been and also posted recommendation for Hotel Gabriel.
Quiet place, friendly staff, not to far from Südbahnhof (one of
the reasons I choose Hotel Gabriel). Access by and to public
transportation (tram, underground) acceptable (a short walk),
from there no problem for the rest of the city.

Buffet breakfeast was good. But sorry: no first hand info on TV
(have given up watching TV programms some years ago!) and
tea - best probably is to check with the hotel.

Hope you will be there after November 18 (2006) - make sure not
to miss the Weihnachtsmarkt!

have a look at

www.austria.info

it is the official webpage of the austrian tourist office.

I have been in Vienna many times. but I do not remember where I have slept.
Normally I go to the tourist office in Theaterplatz and try to find a hotel
there

In any case. Hotels in Austria are very clean
the public transport in very very efficient

Most of the monuments are in the pedestrians zone.. so if you find a hotel
near the centre you can walk around
The only main monument that is out of the centre is Schoenbruenn.. but it
can easily be reached by subway..

in the Vienna cathedral there is a crypt that is open only with guided tours
at certain times..
then you can go to the top of the roof via different lifts
when i was there last time. the sky was not clear so actually there was
nothing to see from the roof.
also there were major works of restoring--

if you can find the time. do not miss the baroque Abbey of Melk. about 60kms
from Vienna

It is really a must.

again. if you have the time. try to catch the hydrofoil from Vienna to
Bratislava. it is also a must.
Near Vienna you can find the old roman village of Carnuntum.. it was a main
switching point between north and south of europe.
Notably.. Amber from Baltic shores was taken to Aquileia ( italy )
The legend says that inhabitants of Aquileia, trying to escape barbarians..
founded Venezia.

My advice would be to wait until the beginning of November before
booking. You will easily find a four star hotel for under €100 per
night (including full breakfast) at that time of year. Try the major
chains (particularly Accor).

Is Austrian beer that good?

That's what I had in mind. Because it might be quite cold at that time
of year, I thought it would be nice to be able to pop back to the
hotel during the day to change into a heavier or lighter jacket, or
whatever.

Noted.

I'll send Herself up. I don't do heights.

Five nights. An out-of-town trip is possible. Is the hydrofoil trip
scenic? The denizens of this group don't seem to rate Bratislava
itself very highly.

Grazie.

I wondered about that. I have no idea what the ratio is of business
users to tourists in Vienna. If the hotels depend primarily on
tourists, then looking for a late availability deal would make good
sense.

Thanks for your advice.

"We flew into Aeroport de gRunge to transit from Barcelona to Tokyo. It
was BAD. We arrived at 7am and there was no one to take care of us. We
were stuck in front of the transit area. We couldn't get in to the
transit area for 2 hours. No one would help us and no one could speak
English. When we wondered around we were yelled to go back to the
transit gate. I was even slapped by one of the officers. No food nor no
drinks for two hours. Finally after calling Japan to take care of the
situation, someone came to check our passport and let us into the
transit area. What a nightmare! The transit area is small and people
are unfriendly. They don't know how to smile. Avoid this airport if
possible."
