What cheap places are there to stay in NYC? Youth hostels, low-standard hotels, etc?

There are a number of private hostels; I have no personal experience
of the. I have stayed at the HI (Hostelling International) hostel on
the Upper West Side and was quite happy with it. I have also stayed at
the Vanderbilt YMCA on the East Side in Midtown. It's more expensive
than the HI Hostel, but it has private rooms, either singles or
2-person bunks. Both have air-conditioning, which can be important
during a New York summer. Both have a young, international clientele.

There is also a Y on the West Side, which sounds very similar to the
Vanderbilt.
