Default Youth Hostel, Naples

Planning a visit to Italy, spending first three nights in Venice. I have
reservations the rest of the time, since I am, for the first time in my life,
going on a group tour (but it's a group tour with a group of my friends, so
that will probably be OK).

We're going four days earlier, spending 3 nights in Naples, 1 night in rome

Anyone know about good lodgings (We are considering the HI Youth Hostel)
in Naples?

If you're considering a hostel, you can do a lot worse than the "Six
Small Rooms" hostel in Naples. It's run by a friendly Australian woman.
You'll can find it in the Lonely Planet Italy or online.

Thanks. We hostelled a lot in Germany and liked it. Since we will stay in
hotels much nicer than we usually travel in the rest of the time, hostelling
the first three or four days will be good.

WE are now considering also the HI Youth Hostel in Salerno. Maybe 1 night in
Naples, 2 in Salerno? We are going to Solofra for one day, trying to figure
out our best possibility.

Tentativley we are planning

Friday - day in Naples, check out my Grandfather's old Neighborhood. Sleep
in Naples
Saturday - Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaeum
Sunday - Visit Solofra, go to church in cathedral where my great grandparents
were married, see rectory (from outsidede) where great0uncle lived.
Monday - Early Train to Rome, be in Rome before noon.

Is Naples or Salerno a better place to be SAturday/Sunday nights? Or is there
another better place?

Why 3 nights in Venice ?

1 day is enough time IMHO

why Naples and not Sorrento, amalfi,Capri ?? you are missing prob the best
part of Italy by not going there

nice hostel in Sorrento that is close to all of the above and close to
Pompeii

1 hour from Naples by train

I spent 1 month in Italy and visiting Naples for a few hours made me realise
that its prob the dodgiest place in Italy to visit , be extremely careful of
all your stuff

Agreed. Great place but I don't see much point in staying very long.

Ischia is very nice too, in parts. Especially the hot springs on the
cliff face. Beautiful in the middle of Summer.

I didn't find Naples nearly as bad as everyone says. However, there
isn't much particularly appealing about the place.

Because I am on a tour with my church, a pilgrimage trip. We arrive in
a late afternoon, and spend a full day in Venice, then another day is a
dy trip, and the next morning we leave.

Because my grandfather was born in Venice and I want to see the street he
lived in and the church he attended, and where my great grandmother is
buried. They don't have those in Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri, though I am
going to Solofra, where his parents were married and his uncle died.

Did you have a grandfather that was born there?

It makes a bit of a difference.
