Main street to walk in your city?

I am reading a book written by an author who walked the entire length
of Broad St in Philadelphia, and he comments on what he finds along
the way. I remember someone wrote a book about his walk along the
entire length of Broadway in New York City.

I live in Pittsburgh, and figure that Forbes Ave would be a good
street to walk the length, and the walk would take me through
representative sections of Pittsburgh. There are a couple of other
streets which might fit the bill also. Market St in San Francisco, and
Broadway in Oakland, CA would seem to also fit the bill. El Camino
Real (not 101) would work for the Pennisula.

Do readers have suggestions for their cities? In Cleveland my choice
would probably be Euclid.

The problem with streets like this is that even in their heyday, they were
not designed as tourist destinations. They were designed mostly to be
thoroughfairs, i.e., the highways of their day to help poeple quickly get
from one section of town to another. Most of the interesting parts of a big
town were off the main highway. Walking these streets might be interesting
from a historic point of view, but they were not really representative of the
city back then, and not now either.

Is any visitor (except for professional historians) to the San Francisco area
really going to be interested in walking more than a few blocks of El Camino
Real or even Market Street? Probably not.

In Wahington, DC, most people would say Pennsylvania Avenue, but Connecticut
Avenue would be a very interesting choice as well.\

My office is on North Broad Street and I have walked the six miles from
my office down to the stadium area several times. Its a nice walk. I
really have no desire to walk in the opposite direction though.

Trenton, New Jersey

Walk down West State Street to see where the biggest crooks in the Western
Hemisphere do their best work. Best to wear hip waders as the area oozes
with sleaze and slime.

Walk down Calhoun Street to see druggies, hos and drive-bys. Stay away from
the side streets as they are not as safe as the main drag.

Easy for Atlanta -- Peachtree Street. It's in the process of being
transformed, after years of putting up skyscrapers. Pretty soon you'll be
able to walk the entire thing with storefronts, cafes, and parks.

In Vancouver, nothing really sticks out as being the city's main
street. These would probably be closest:

Broadway
Hastings
Granville
Georgia
Robson
Davie
Main

Well, I'm automatically OT. But in my "city" it would be
Overall Drive. It's the one beside the creek in the pic at
the bottom. It's also where I live, so I'm biased.

I walked from Mountain View to San Francisco on El Camino Real a
few years ago. That's about a 40 mile walk, so the family and I
spent the night along the way, and then took the train back. It
was an interesting experience, but then I live here.

I've walked most (possibly all) of El Camino between here and San
Jose, but not at one time. And I've walked most of Market Street
too. It's something to do if you like to walk.

I've forgotten the stats the family was keeping, but if I recall
correctly, Jack in the Box edged out Starbucks as the most-represented
business on El Camino Real in this area.

Key West, Florida

Duval St.

Simonton St.

Fleming St.

Truman St.

The cool thing about Duval Street is you can walk from the Gulf of
Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean in 20 minutes or so. Truman St. goes
through many different changes. My favorite is the corner of Margaret
and Truman where sits the Margaret Truman Laundromat. Further up past
churches and small book shops are go go bars and tattoo parlors. Beyond
Bertha St. are modest cinder block houses with car ports.
