beaches in Cancun
I have been told that the nice beaches in Cancun
are primarily for visual enjoyment as there is a strong undertoe and not many venture out too far. Is that true? Also, are there any nudist beaches in or around Cancun? Thanks |

Is that true? Some of Cancun's beaches are exposed to the open sea, making some of the waves undercurrents particularly strong. Cancun's hotels and beaches run a consistent flag colour system to advise tourists of sea conditions. Watch the flags, and follow the rules and you'll be fine: White - Excellent Sea Conditions - go and have fun! Green - Normal Sea Conditions - safe to swim! Yellow - Changeable sea conditions - be careful and alert! Black or Red - Unsafe / Danger - head for the pool! Also, are there any nudist beaches in or around Cancun? Thanks There are, but you have to search for them once you get there. Ask the right questions, and you'll find them. --Douglas |

Stay at a hotel facing Isle Murejes and you won't have any problem. These beaches are safe and good for snorkling. The oceanside beaches can be very dangerous. Susie Q |

I do not believe that any Cancun hotels on the east side own anything but black or red flags. I don't agree with this, but here is a much better and detailed reference to the beaches in (and near) Cancun: http://www.absoluteultimate-cancun-l...ch_beaches.php. --Douglas |

Yellow - Changeable sea conditions - be careful and alert! Black or Red - Unsafe / Danger - head for the pool! Spent four days and nights there a couple of years ago at an oceanfront hotel in Cancun. Everyday somebody at or within earshot of the hotel beach drowned. Only saw black flags, and the lifeguard dissapeared after 4 in the afternoon. I went in swimming a couple of times and the undertow was strong enough to knock me off my feet. It would have been dangerous for me if I had panicked. The other weird thing that I noticed was that there were places on the beach where I could see waves forming as the water rushed back out to sea. These outgoing waves mixed with the incoming waves creating localized regions a few feet from shore where the water got very deep and violent. I saw a few unwary travellers get stuck in these areas and require rescue. In fact I had to rescue my wife. Unless you a strong, in good shape, and familiar with ocean swimming, I suggest that you don't swim in the ocean off the coast of Cancun. Another thing that I suggest is that you don't get your hair done in cornrows either. Both could be equally fatal. |
