Default Seattle to Whistler

I have to travel from Seattle to Whistler early in July. I need to
decide whether to rent a car in Seattle and drive to Whistler or fly
to Vancouver and take the bus from the airport to Whistler.

I'd appreciate opinions. BTW, what's the approximate driving time
from Seattle to Whistler?

It depends on what you want to do in Whistler. If you intend to stay in
the townsite then a car is more of a burden and unnecessary expense than
a convenience. Fly to YVR and take the YVR-Whistler bus.

If you will be exploring the surrounding area then a car will be needed.
Rent in Seattle and drive up. If your trip will have you crossing the
border (especially back south) on a weekend, consider flying to
Vancouver and renting a car there. Border lineups can be pretty
horrendous (I have waited 3 hours) on July weekends.

You can take a bus all the way. I don't know bus times, but it's not far
from Seattle to Vancouver, and Whistler is about an hour and a half north of
there. I wouldn't go to the expense of a car rental. I've taken rentals
from Washington to BC before, but on the ferry. I don't know what it's like
these days, but probably quicker and easier on public transport.

I have been out to Whistler 4 times since the 80s and always had a great
time. The place has grown a lot over the last three decades ad my last
visit was bout 10 years ago, so my input might be obsolete. However,
FWIW, on one trip I was in Vancouver and took a bus up to Whistler. The
bus fare at that time was only about $10 return, ridiculously cheap at
the time.

Unless things have changed drastically since my last visit, most of the
hotels, restaurants and shops are centrally located, so there isn't much
need for a car. Even if you had to take a cab to some place that is
too far to walk, it would still be cheaper than renting a car for the day.

The drive up for Vancouver is spectacular.
