Default Seeking advice on visiting Petersburg & Richmond, VA.

I'll be taking a road trip though Virginia in October and want to drive through
Petersburg and Richmond. My interest is mostly historical. I want to see
Petersburg National Battlefield. In Richmond I want to see Capitol Square,
Hollywood Cemetery, and the White House of the Confederacy. But I know nothing
about Petersburg or Richmond.

I'll be approaching from the Williamsburg area on SR 5. I want to go through
Petersburg first, then Richmond. I'll take interstates if I must but I prefer
to take state routes. Is there any reason not to take U.S. 1 through Petersburg
up to Richmond?

I'm hoping some friendly folks from the area, or experienced travelers, might
have some tips or advice, suggestions or advisories?

You can't do that, at least not directly. SR 5 is on the north side
of the James and Petersburg is on the south side. Stay on SR 5 long
enough and you'll be on Main Street in downtown Richmond.

Before leaving the Williamsburg area you may want to visit Jamestown.
I prefer Jamestown to CW -- Jamestown is a little more historical and
a little less touristy.

Strange since Jamestown is a complete reconstruction while much of
Williamsburg is original. I find CW far more historical.

Highway 1 is not your scenic little backroad, to put it mildly.
There's no reason to take it rather than I95 unless you want to go
more slowly and get stuck in traffic.
