Geneva - Venice or Zurich - Venice
Hi, I am making my plans for a France-Switzerland-Italy trip in late
Aug this year. I was asked to look at a day trip from Zurich to Venice as the route is very scenic. Now my plans have me departing from Geneva. Is it mainly the same route? Else, is it also scenic or can I look at flying or a night train? thanx, Kram |

You won't have time to see anything in a day trip from either city to
Venice. The travel time is about 7 hours (fastest train) one way from Zurich (which is closer than Geneva). So that's at least 14 hours round trip, not including getting to/from the station. No time to tour. you'll need to spend at least a night. Nancy |

Sorry, my poor choice of words. I did not mean day trip but a day
journey. Is the trip scenic enough to merit a train journey during the day or should I make it an overnight trip? I will be spending probably 2-3 days in Venice. Kram |

Hi Kram,
Is the trip scenic enough to merit a train journey during the day or should I make it an overnight trip? I will be spending probably 2-3 days in Venice. The trip is definitely scenic, whatever your starting point is. Coming from Geneva, you'll first be riding between lake and terraced wineyards (Lausanne-Vevey stretch), then you'll pass the Chillon castle (Montreux), then the train will enter the Valais canton, which is a broad U-shaped valley surrounded by very high peaks. Just after Brig, where the Zurich and Geneva line meets, the train will cross the Alps through the Simplon tunnel. Once in Italy, you'll see some pretty lakeside towns like Stresa, with maybe the Dolomites in the distance. After that it gets flatter and less interesting. -- Philippe Noth, Clarens/Montreux |
