Bomb found in Atlanta airport

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The FBI launched an investigation Wednesday into how an incendiary device ended up in a restroom at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, one of the world's busiest airports. Sources earlier described the device as a hand grenade taped to a cell phone but later said it was not a grenade. The discovery shortly forced the evacuation of a small area of the airport Wednesday morning. The FBI said its Joint Terrorism Task Force was investigating who might have placed the device in the airport. The FBI would describe the device only as "similar to a military trip flare containing highly flammable substance." "This device could have caused very serious injury to anyone handling or tampering with the device," the FBI statement said. The device was found shortly before 11 a.m. in a men's restroom in the airport atrium, outside an area where security checks are performed, an airline security source said. Using a robot, police moved the device to a secure area and conducted a controlled detonation, disabling the device. The FBI said it was transported from the airport where it was examined by police and bomb experts from the agency and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The airline security source described the device as being wrapped in duct tape and having suspicious components protruding from it. Authorities were reviewing videotape from the more than 300 security cameras at the airport and other evidence. The FBI launched an investigation Wednesday into how an explosive device ended up in a restroom at the Atlanta, Georgia, airport. |
