Default National Geog. says Scottish Highlands beat Colorado Rockies, Key West and Yosemite for sustainable tourism

National Geographic magazine has rated the Scottish Highlands (75) better
than Colorado Rockies (71), Key West (43) and Yosemite (66) for sustainable
tourism. The Scottish Highlands rank 7th in the world, 2nd in Europe after
the top entry, the Norwegian fjords. The top 12 destinations we

82: Norwegian fiords

78: South Island, NZ; Cape Breton Island, Canada; Rorres del Paine, Chile

77: Tasmania

76: Rocky Mountains, Canada

75: Scottish Highlands

74: Kruger National Park, South Africa; Kyoto historic district, Japan;
Quebec City historic centre, Canada; Vermont, USA

73: Bay of Islands, NZ

Here's what panelists were asked. Using the criteria they used, try to rate
your favorite destination. First, consider the following:

.. Environmental and ecological quality.

.. Social/cultural integrity.

.. Condition of built heritage (archaeological, historic, and current
structures).

.. Aesthetic appeal, both natural and human-made.

.. The nature of tourism development: To what degree is it of appropriate
character? Does it benefit local people in a way that encourages protection
of the locale? How well are tourists informed about the locale and their
proper role in it?

.. And, perhaps most important, the future outlook for the destination in
terms of sustainability, taking into account all prevailing stewardship
practices and policies.

The next time you head off on holiday in Scotland, think green!
VisitScotland's Green Tourism Business Scheme encourages tourism businesses
to be environmentally friendly, whether they be hotels or guest houses, bed
and breakfasts or self-catering or tourist attractions.
Launched five years ago, the GTBS now has over 420 members, all of whom
are rigorously assessed and given a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, depending
on the level of energy-efficiency they achieve. They are encouraged to
introduce measures, which are as diverse as using low-energy light bulbs or
corridor lights which go on when people approach, or recycling paper
products to make fire briquettes, or using local produce on menus, or
promoting wildlife walks and cycle hire in their area.

The Tourism & Environment Forum is a partnership of public and private
organisations set up to promote sustainable tourism in Scotland. We
recognise that the environment is the Scottish tourism industry's main asset
and we are working to ensure that both tourism and the environment are well
managed.
