any secrets for Americans to securing cheap western-style motel rooms

Our newspapers quoted a travel agent saying they advising their clients not
to go to Beijing during the Olympics because the rooms are costing the
equivalent of CAD$1200 per night.

Aren't you planning to cook in your hotel room? *

Naah! He'll be working as a janitor just like the way he is doing now,
and will be fed left overs from the chopsuey shop.

Chop suey was a Chinese American invention. There is no such item in
menu in China. You can always order won ton soup.

I remember people were able to camp for the Greek Olympics. But
camping is not really a Chinese (or Asian) activity, so I don't think
there are any campgrounds nearby. There'd be no cheap hotels within
100 mile radius of Beijing. There are other activities in other
cities (Shanghai, HK?), but again I think cheap and Olympics are two
opposite concepts.

Like many people in California, just camp under freeway underpasses in
Beijing. It's going to be hot in Beijing anyway.
