Canada becoming police state?
Jerry Kraus wrote:
Well, actually, socialized medicine works far better than Capitalist medicine. Virtually no one in Canada would trade their system for the greedy incompetence of American doctors. Occasionally, Canadians may need specialized procedures more readily available in the U.S., but, although FOX news and loons like yourself like to harp on these, these are very much exceptions. The U.S. has the worst health care, and the most expensive health care in the industrialized world! Capitalist incompetence, as usual. Plus the Canadian system drives manufacturing jobs north, especially auto manufacturing. It's a huge expense that the automobile companies don't have to deal with in Canada. |

Canada becoming police state?
Sure, the American Fascists claim Canada is a police state. It's a
lame excuse! They want to take us over because we have a trade surplus, a better currency, one fifth of the world's fresh water, we are their largest oil supplier, and we have a fairly socialized European style government which bugs American gangster corporations and your fascists no end, etc. In 2000 Bush and Cheney stole the election in Florida. In 2004 they played dirty tricks in Ohio. And you have the Fascist Patriot act 1 & 2 and the really creepy Military Commissions Act. Read about this it on the net. On May 4 last year, the White House issued the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive,KEY PARTS OF WHICH REMAIN CLASSIFIED (what would you expect) and hence shrouded from public view. Wonder why? The directive outlines procedures to respond to a so called "catastrophic emergency," defined broadly as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions." Which means anything your fascists see fit.! The unclassified part of the directive reveals little about who would have the authority to invoke emergency powers during a catastrophe "THE BUSH LEGAL TEAM HAS PUSHED A CONTROVERSIAL THEORY THAT THE CONSTITUTION GIVES THE PRESIDENT AN UNWRITTEN POWER TO DISOBEY LAWS AT HIS OWN DISCRETION TO PROTECT NATIONAL SECURITY," writes Charlie Savage in the Boston Globe. Imagin that! Added to this is the Department of Homeland Security's $385 million contract awarded to Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root in January 2006 to build temporary detention facilities (concentration camps). The Bush administration could declare a state of emergency by starting a war with Iran or with the assassination of a presidential candidate or lets no kid ourselves, anything they want. Read what you are in for should your fascist government have one more crooked election. Canada is a police state, yeah sure! |

Canada is a police state, yeah sure! Well, you have a bit of a problem with me, because I'm a dual citizen -- born in the States, grew up in Canada, moved back to the States -- and I think that Bush and Cheney are fascists, but that Canada IS a police state. In the sense that police have no checks on their power, at least in many parts of the country. I'm not saying they're violent, particularly. Canadian police are less violent, in general, than American police. But they do have more power than American police. The Court system seems to be somewhat closer to "guilty until proven innocent" -- like the British -- than "innocent until proven guilty". In other words, the police make the call, not judge or jury, in Canada. And civil litigation is virtually pointless in Canada, removing an important tool for fighting oppression and incompetence. All Canadian judges are government appointed, none are elected, as they are in the U.S., again centralizing control. All Canadian crown attorneys are government appointed, while U.S. district attorneys are usually elected. The Canadian Supreme Court does not see its function as opposing the government, but as "interpreting its will". Canada has a more centralized power structure than the U.S. That makes it more of a police state. |
