Default ATMs in Teheran and Damascus

Are there international ATMs or do you have to bring cash with you?

there are no ATMs in Iran
no credit cards accepted
because of the US Embargo

some shops will give you some cash with a credit card. as they might have
bank Accounts in Dubai.But expect a fat commission ( 5% to 10%)

a lot of exchange offices
better than Banks where you will only lose yr time
bring only NEW dollars or they will give you a lower exchange rate

There was definitely a working ATM at the Sheraton in Damascus (back in
mid-2006).

yes they take everything
as I told you. exchange offices are almost everyhwere
if you have a car with driver. let the driver take you to a place he knows
Normally. exchange rates are not shown.. so it takes the usual time and
stress to bargain..

yes.. ATMS in Syria are almost everywhere. they will give you pounds
(syrian ) or dollars..
whatever you like
there is no black market exchanges. so paying in dollars or in syrian pounds
is almost the same
ir is also possible to buy back dollars with syrian pounds.

Alfred before I forget..
the official currency in Iran is Rial.. but they always speak about TOMANS
(10 rials )

so. before you buy anyhting. just be sure you are talking about Rials and
not Tomans.

the banknotes in circulations were.. the biggest ones..
50.000 and 20.000
the other banknotes are useless

for a few dollars you will have a wad of banknotes..
normally 20.000 or 50.000
