Default Bangkok Hotel 3 to 4 * Close to good shopping areas and safe for lone female?

Hotels may be safe but Bangkok is not safe for a lonely lady.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a 3 to 4 star hotel under $100 a night that is in
a good location (i.e. safe to walk to and from at night for a lone
female) and is close to or near to transport that will not take long
to get to the good shopping areas of Bangkok!! Thanks, any help would
be appreciated.

Many BKK hotels will fit your requirements. However:-

The Pathumwan Princess www.pprincess.com
would be very suitable for you. It's part of the Mah
Boon Khrong (MBK) shopping complex. Walk through the glass doors from the
hotel lobby and you can shop till you drop and carry it back to your room !
Then you can walk through the
door at the far end of the Tokyu department store in MBK and you are in the
Skytrain system which will take you to the Silom Road shopping area, the
Patpong night markets, the Sukhumvit area where the Emporium is and even out
to the weekend (J.J) market .

I agree with you 100% Sandy,
It's now my regular place to stay when in Bkk.
Very good value too.
I also like the external salt water swimming pool on the 8th floor.

Regards

Karen

I don't think BKK is worse than any other city for lone females, if you are
not familiar with the locality then you are vulnerable anywhere, meet the
right people and it can be very enjoyable, not the place to spend a long
time in but 2 to 4 nights as you transit to other places and it can be
enjoyable to visit many times.

I would recommend the Asia hotel
(http://www.asiatravel.com/asiahotel/index.html) 999THB/25USD/16GBP per
night, it has a entrance straight on to the sky train with good access to
some parts of BKK, Siam Square a very large shopping area is the next stop
going south, the best hotels for a view are on the river but these are more
expensive and can take a lot more time to get to and from.

Many hotels have a very helpful concierge & booking desk for daily sight
seeing trips which are good to see BKK & Thailand and if you are alone it is
a chance to make friends to team up with.

Getting out and about is easy but you do need to be careful, when you leave
any busy hotel in BKK there is a peeking order:
first. the hotels own limo (very expensive)
then. the Taxis (also very expensive "special price no meter")
then. the Tuk-Tuk's (a motor bike van with three wheel which they rarely use
all at the same time, the greener you are the more you pay, but they can get
you where you want very fast, have you seen the film the Italian Job where
the cars were driven by Tuk-Tuk drives)
All will great you with "where you go" and will make suggestions where to go
which will make them a lot of money at your expense.
I always walk away from the front of the hotel about 50 to100 meters and
flag down a passing "Meter Taxi" open the back door and always insist they
switch on the meter before getting in.

Avoid the taxi/tuk-tuk driver who offers you a free or cuts the price of
your trip if you will visit an emporium owned by a friend or relatives which
you just happen to be passing, or any person who greets you in the street
and offers to take you to such a place, you wont get out of there without
parting with a lot of your money for some worthless trinkets or a made to
measure disposable suit.

I would recommend reading about and get advice on what to see before you go,
BKK is a lively 24hr place but the night life is defiantly oriented to the
male visitor, if it is your first time in BKK I would recommend a tour of
the Watts & Temples, or the Grand Palace, both normally a morning excursion,
plan some sort of itinerary of what you want to see, you probably will not
see it all, but you will not be disappointed and probably looking forward to
another visit to the "land of smiles".

Bangkok is a very enjoyable place if you stay street-wise.
