Carnival announces record sales and fare increases
Nonny wrote:
How will the "new" prices compare to the ones of earlier days before the crash in Fall '08? Even with fares going up and the "new" fares coming out, for the most part, fares will not be up to 2008 levels but they are getting closer. -- George Leppla Countryside Travel http://www.CruiseMaster.com Blog http://cruisemaster.typepad.com/my_weblog/ Facebook http://www.facebook.com/CruiseMaster |

Hi Nonny, With fares down 25-30% from 2008, a 5% rise will not get them to 2008 levels. -- Ray Goldenberg 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 Lighthouse Travel http://www.lighthousetravel.com Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/lighthousetravl Follow us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/ray.goldenberg |

wrote in message I think it is a ploy which they hope will be a self fulfilling prophecy. Get demand to increase by scaring people into bookings now. If they get more bookings by it then they can sustain the higher prices. I agree, Charles...With unemployment so high, why would they consider raising prices?. Sounds more like greed by using scare tactics to me . --Jean That's exactly the point. At least they've been astute enough to not implement the fuel surcharge with so many people out of work, losing their homes, on food stamps, working only part time, or working jobs with no benefits, etc. --Tom |

Warren Also, both RCL and CCL have successfully increased marketing efforts in Europe and Asia. Passenger numbers have been growing at double digit rates the last couple of years and are expected to reach new records this year. Of course, living beyond your means is not generally the norm in Asean and European countries. There has also been a noticeable push for cruising in Australia. I think RCCL and CCL are active there and have had a big increase in ships and sales in Aus/NZ waters. Maybe our "down under" readers can provide accurate data. I mentioned this on my blog a while ago. Sales and fares are way up in Australia for Royal Caribbean. Look at http://www.etravelblackboard.com/sho...d=101868&nav=5 Royal Caribbean is sending the Radiance of the Seas to Australia, and the Rhapsody is already there. -- George Leppla Countryside Travel http://www.CruiseMaster.com Blog http://cruisemaster.typepad.com/my_weblog/ Facebook http://www.facebook.com/CruiseMaster |

Warren I disagree... with Walmart being the largest employer in the US and almost everyone at Walmart considered underemployed based on their low pay, mostly part time positions, and lack of benefits... and the same going on in many other places, you're simply not going to fill your ship with people who are still making the big bucks. People are out of work, working less hours, or working part time, or at jobs making a lot less than they did before, or even forced into early retirement with some money but not a lot... but those people still want or need to get away with their kids, and if the cruise lines give them an inexpensive option, it's a way to fill the ships. The other option is to let the ships sit idle, like new Lexus's in new car dealer parking lots... --Tom |

wrote: What is unusual this morning is that Carnival made a public announcement that they were raising fares. Hi Everyone, As I mentioned in an earlier posting in this thread more cruise lines are announcing price increases. I attended a meeting yesterday where Azamara Club is raising their rates on March 1. Bookings made by February 28, 2010 will enjoy current rates. -- Ray Goldenberg 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 Lighthouse Travel http://www.lighthousetravel.com Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/lighthousetravl Follow us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/ray.goldenberg |

I'd like to know just who these people are that are "supposedly" filling these ships. Everyone I know, are having a hard time of it, and are not going to take their families anywhere unless it's a very very good deal. More likely will use what credit they have it just to survive until the economy gets better. I think the cruise lines may find that their bulletins about "book now before prices rise" may backfire if the economy does not turn around quickly enough. Jobs in the US have been going to Asia and Mexico by the millions since the very early 1980's (the "Reaganomics" Greed is GOOD era, where it was all about chasing cheap labor). That exit of jobs continued through the Bush, Clinton, and Bush eras. For the past 10-15 years, credit and smoke and mirrors have given us a fake economy. But now that's seen for what it was. Just how quickly do you expect this economy to turn around? It took 30 years of chasing cheap labor in places like China to get us to this point. The jobs are gone. What kind of economic turn around to you see happening "quickly enough"? Where exactly are the jobs suddenly going to come from to turn this economy around? --Tom |
