From the looks of it, no better than when I was there 3 years ago. Tirana is kinda developed, but the rest of it is distinctly 3rd world. It doesn't resemble anything else in Europe though, and for this reason may be worth a visit if you're up for an adventure holiday. Just don't expect to find picturesque, undiscovered coastal towns that ooze charm. They don't exist. -- -- DFM - http://www.deepfriedmars.com --- -- |

The country is developping rapidly. Many new buildings. More and more cars .... The best point is the kindness of the people. -- http://www.jmrw.com/ J'ai découvert que tout le malheur des hommes vient d'une seule chose, qui est de ne savoir pas demeurer en repos dans une chambre. The best point is the kindness of the people. Yes, but that's not greatly different to anywhere else I have been. The thing is that outside of Tirana they are not used to seeing many foreigners, so you are a little special to them, because you have made the effort to go there. Unfortunate prices are usually increased due to the perception that you are a rich foreigner. ( -- --- DFM - http://www.deepfriedmars.com --- -- |

"Tantale" wrote in message ... The best point is the kindness of the people. My recollections of Albania from '94 a 1. The overpowering stench of garbage, coal smoke and feces. Public services were in a bit of a crisis. 2. Bunkers. Everywhere you looked there were bunkers. The Albanians used them as privies. 3. Coffee and raki. Every time you turned around you were drinking coffee or raki. The raki is more like grappa than what the Turks call raki. This thread prompted me to break out my old bottle of Albanian raki and have a wee sip, for old time's sake. 4. A wonderful but very long-suffering people with a very unique language, culture and heritage. 5. A beautiful but still dangerous countryside. -- Donald Newcomb DRNewcomb (at) attglobal (dot) net |
