as one poster has said compared to where? But there is more. The perfume
sold duty free at Kennedy is probably (but may not be) the US formulation
which is different (and dare I say inferior in many cases to the european
formulation, you must sample to understand my point but I know for a fact
the Monsieur by Chanel is entirely different while other scents are only a
little different mainly due to the use of denatured alcohol in the US
formulation (don't want any teenagers getting drunk on Chanel No. 5!)

I have found that duty free is not all that great a deal on most things but
your mileage may vary.

We have found that purchasing at say Galleries Lafayette in Paris and then
gettingthe detax is the best way to go (but then the dollar was also a hell
of a lot stronger under a former administration)

"Duty free" means that you don't have the pay the usual sales taxes (or
VAT, excise duty, or whatever). Usually this doesn't make much of a
difference, except for goods that are heavily taxed, such as tobacco and
alcohol. (Also gasoline, but it's not usually sold in duty-free
shops. ;-))
