Default Cell phone questions

Aaron,

Advertised widely in the weekend's newspapers - an 'exclusive' offer from
Vodafone: Red sim - $2. Buy a $49 recharge card - and get $230 of call
credits (to be used within 30 days).

The offer is exclusively available from Tandy, Dick Smith Electronics, Big W
stores and all Woolworths Supermarkets.

Woolworths supermarkets are everywhere - so it's easy to get. The offer will
be available until October I believe.

Vodafone does have coverage around Ayres Rock, but only in the 20 to 30km
immediately around the rock!

Read Frank's last post re coverage carefully. Vodafone is a city/town
carrier really with major highway ribbons included. Small towns often have
no Vodafone coverage (except emergency 112 services which will always get
you through to emergency on any network available!!) - and that can be
frustrating.

Hello,

I'm coming to Oz from the States and want to get cell phone coverage
for my trip. I have a GSM phone (T-Mobile) so I'm pretty sure I can
just take my phone and get an Oz Sim Card. Any advice on how to get
one, where to get it, rates and prices. Any other Oz Cell phone info
you think I should now like how coveratge tends to be (I'll be in
Darwin, Ayres Rock, Melbourne, and most of the East Coast). What are
rates like in the country?

Thanks,
Aaron

Default Cell phone questions

Thanks for all the good advice everyone.

With the exception of being around Ayers Rock for a day or so and
driving the Great Ocean Road and from Cairns to Brisbane I don't expect
to be out of the cities or away from major highways. Plus, I'm not
getting it to have in case of emergency (family back home needs to find
me) or to just have to call ahead about a hotel room/restaurant etc.

So Vodaphone sounds just fine for my needs. The only question now is,
is there anyway to get one before I travel to Aus so I can pass out the
number and get it all set first?

Thanks,
Aaron

Yes!! But not for $2. Several will sell you a sim on the internet - usually
for about $50.

I usually e-mail my new number to family just as soon as I can after
acquiring it. Internet facilities are easy of access in Australia, including
coin in the slot machines.

Are you sure about the emergency 112 services getting through? AFAIR,
in for example Meekatharra (WA) my phone showed no signal/network, so
how should it be able to connect if I dial 112?

Normally, trolls like you wouldn't solicit my response AlmostBob but
I'm feeling good this morning so here goes: If you go back and read the
sentence I ACTUALLY wrote (you can read, right?) you'll see it
elucidated that I was planning on driving the GOR AND between Cairns
and Brisbane -- two separate sections of my itinerary.

As for your mock accent and spelling....I'll give you the benefit of
the doubt and assume that was meant in good natured fun and not a poke
at American intelligence or eloquence. I've learned in many years of
traveling the States and the world, that there is ignorance to be found
everywhere. We certainly have our fair share, it's true, but many
people don't fall in that category -- now you've confirmed that your
own varietal.

Once again, thanks to everyone else who has been very kind in helping
me out with my question. If even a fraction of your country is as nice
as you all, I'm in for a great trip.

This webpage says that the Telstra tower will pick up your 112 call in
Meekatharra even if you don't have a Telstra sim.
