one thing I guess is of major importance is your attitude towards other
cultures. It's not about being accepted/respected--that part is earned)
it's about understanding. If you understand the culture you are visiting,
respect it for what it is, try to learn about it and most importantly...
(doesn't matter what race you are... you MUST leave your "AMERICAN" attitude
at home)
And before anyone gives me any slack about this.. I'm a professional
backpacker and have travelled quite abit (Moroc, Mali, Burkina Fasu,
Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan, Kenya,Haiti, DR, Turks and Caicos) I have seen many
an American hide behind the Canadian Flag or the Maple Leaf.. I have had
many a discussion with the "travellers" who purport that other countries
need the American tourist cause they "spend" money etc...usually, if your
NOT American, you can pick this up right away.
When you travel, because of your skin color alone you will be an object of
interest to the people you are visiting.. not too much in Europe because
there is a major influx of Africans there. But, in smaller places where
"Black Negro" is not widely seen ie: Central America or S. America you will
be seen as different.
In the Carribean, you will not necessarily be accepted cause you are
black(most everyone is black there)
but because you are an American and you "supposidely"(sp) have $$.

I guess it boils down to what you want out of your life and where YOU would
feel more comfortable.. ie: You may feel accepted in the middle of the
Brazilian Jungle with the Natives but would YOU feel comfortable NOT being
around other people (black Negro--not Native Black) who share the same back
ground as yourself?

The more rural you go (in any country) the more
racist attitudes or difficulties you (may) encounter. (Such
holds for the UK, for example).

Funny you should mention this. I once had a very dear friend from England
who married a black man and was shocked at the negative feedback she got
from local residents (North Carolina). She simply couldn't understand it.
Once she said to me in her charming Cockney accent "You know we don't have
any of this racial stuff back home in England, we didn't have the civil war
there".

From this statement I just always assumed that there was no racial prejudice
in the UK. I am suprised to hear that there is.

Common sense would dictate that in coutries where black people are
predominate that there would be less racial bull****. Such places being
Columbia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Caribbean, Africa (except South Africa, of
course), some South Pacific Island (PNG). Europe on the other hand might be
difficult since that's where all the problems started in the first place.

Depending on your coloring (light skinned versus dark), Southern Italy and
parts of Spain and Portugal might be a possibility since a lot of N.
Africans migrated across the Mediterranean sea and co-mingled with the
locals giving many of them a very dark "olive" appearance. A light-skinned
black person would fit right in there. Same goes with Greece and many Middle
Eastern Countries.

You might be suprised to know that Skandanavian countries are very tolerant
of other races and I don't believe there are many issues with minorities in
places like Amsterdam. Skandanavians are very advanced intellectually and
emotionally as compared to the United States.

Places to avoid, I would say would be countries that have STRONG American
influences, most particularly Germany.

Where do you get this from? Southern parts of spain, france and italy
have had a lot of recent immigration from africa and this (combined
of course with the bad stock market/economics which drives racism
everywhere) has lead to much increased racism in those places.
