My DH needs the wheel chair for walking long distances between gates. I

Part of the definition of health is being able to walk a distance.

wheelchairs/handicapped access (I use a brompton folding bicycle day to
day... get a wheelchair in the airport... and don't flinch a bit about
using a handicapped space... I've got about 25% heart function and a
paralyzed right leg, a back broken in 3 places and a pelvis broken in 5...

which is why I've wondered how hard it is to get around on the big
cruise ships... sure I can walk (in pain) 50' but that's about it.

so... how accessible are the big cruisers?

If I were you, I'd rent a scooter to get around the big ships. 50' isn't
going to get you from your cabin to the dining room.
