I'm considering going to the Mayan coast for my honeymoon in July. What is
the weather like this time of year? Hot? Raining?
Any other suggestions for a honeymoon in july?

July is in the Rainy Season. This means hot humid weather inland. But
on the coast prevailing winds off the sea will keep you cool. Yes,
Rainy Season means rain. But, in the tropics a storm can suddenly blow
up, rain like crazy and then blow out in less then 15 minutes. I
usually find a convenient palapa to stay under until a storm blows by.

I don't know what you are considering. But, may I suggest somewhere
other than Cancun? There are lots of nice little Mexican beach towns
south of Cancun that have something to offer besides Senior Frogs.
Puerto Morales, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Puerto Aventures, and Tulum
are worth investigating.

I stayed at this resort which is available EP or AI. What I like is
that it's in the quieter part of Playa del Carmen, yet it's only a short
walk to the town attractions and Cozumel ferry.

I stayed at El Gran Porto Real the Royal Porto Real is brand new and
has access to everything at El Gran Porto Real. For the higher price
you are actually getting two Porto Reals for the price of one.

We were thinking about staying at Riu Palace. It looks pretty nice. My only
concern is the weather in July.

I was on Cozumel in July for a week two summers ago. Very nice, occasional
(rare) showers, once you got inland at all it was HOT.

If you opt to visit Chinchen Itza do it early in the morning. By the
afternoon the heat and humidity are almost unbearable. This is also true
for other inland excursions as well. Buy trip insurance. The rainy
season is also the hurricane season. While it is unlikely, there is
always the possibility of hurricane landfall any time between June and
September.

July in Yucatan is hot. But, why worry about that. Its probably just as hot in
Chicago.
I would not concern myself with the weather at all. Be prepared for sun and hot
and you will be fine. It is mostly a frame of mind.
Look at it this way. You won't have to pack so many clothes.

(off-grid beach cottages in Tulum)

Okay, I realize that this is mightily un-hip of me, but
I would strongly recommend considering someplace with air
conditioning in July.

We stayed in a Tulum beach cottage in July a few years ago
(Zamas, a very nice place with a great vegetarian friendly
restaurant called Que Fresca, which I would recommend if you're
in the area).

My two lasting memories from that stay:

1) My ear wax melted overnight, and dribbled out of my ears
onto the pillow!

2) We had brought a scrabble board game with us, and left a
game in progress when the generators went off at 10:00.
By the next morning, each of the four corners of the
scrabble board had warped some 8 inches up off the table,
curling inwards like a flower. All of the scrabble tiles
had piled together in a heap at the center, like a treasure
of golden pollen awaiting the attentions of a passing
scrabble bee. 8^)

This was in our room!

We are talking very, very hot and very, very humid. I usually
do pretty well with heat, but I couldn't sleep at all my first
night there.

There are certainly advantages: it's totally non-touristy, it's
right on the beach, it's kind of romantic, it's not a disco resort.

But there's a comfort premium to pay, and it can be steep.
I would personally recommend considering accomdations with
AC, or at least with overhead fans which are powered throughout
the night.

cheers,
