Edinburgh to Hadrian's Wall to York

I'm traveling to Great Britain this fall. I'll be starting in
Edinburgh.

Would it be possible for me to travel from Edinburgh by train to
Hadrian's Wall (exploring Hadrian's wall as far as Vindolanda) and
then continue by train to York all in one day? Or should I try to find
a place to stay near the wall?

Any suggestions?

I think it's just about possible, but perhaps not advisable. Obviously it
will take longer to actually walk along the wall than if you use local bus
to get between points of interest. Some useful links a

Bear in mind that to get the cheapest train travel, you should book well in
advance for specific trains. The cheapest tickets will not allow break of
journey, so you would need (say) Edinburgh-Newcastle and Newcastle-York as
separate tickets. (Like cheap airlines, on separate ticketing if your first
segment is delayed and you miss the second train, tough luck.)

I think that the nearest town would be Hexham,a short train ride from
Newcastle.
Whilst you're in Northumberland,try and see more of that county...it is not
visited much but is a wonderful and unspoilt place ,in some ways better
that York.Try the coast with its castles and small villages,islands .

No problem. Get a train from Edinburgh Waverley to Newcastle Central
(about 1hr 30min). Thence a train from Newcastle to Hexham (45min).
The Vindolanda museum and Hadrian's Wall are nearby - take a taxi to
get there (allow 15-20min). Hadrian's Wall itself stretches across
Northern England for some considerable distance and the section near
Hexham is typical of the whole (the Romans built their fortifications
to standard plans!), so no need to venture further afield unless you
want to.

Taxi back to Hexham station, train to Newcastle (allow 1hr 30min).
Trains run from Newcastle Central to York regularly and take 1hr.

So, timed right, you could have 5-6hr at Vindolanda and the Wall and
still get to York in the same (long) day.
