We're looking into booking a balcony guarantee on Star Princess with
a guarantee of at least category BE / BF balcony rooms. These balcony
rooms look a little suspect in that it appears people can see right
into the balcony and room from the promenade walking deck. Does anyone
have an experience of staying in one of these rooms ?

Believe you are referring to the cabins on Emerald Deck which is above the
Promenade - the problem is the forward walk-around deck is the Emerald Deck
which is reached via steps from the Promenade Deck. Individuals using the
steps are actually only a few feet from your balcony as they walk by! IMO
not ideal for privacy!!

Yes, these are the balcony rooms located in the front on Emerald deck
overlooking the promenade walkway. I'm concerned that perople walking
by in front of the balcony may be able to see through the balcony
glass or perhaps even over the top of it and right into the cabin. If
anybody is sailing on the Star soon maybe they could check it out and
e-mail me upon their return..................

Ernie, as I previously indicated people walking by these cabins will be able
to see thru/over the glass - and if the cabin is lite up esp at night and
the curtains are open (!), they will be able to see directly into the cabin!

I was suppose to be on the cruise the week after it caught fire. Let us
know if it still has a smokey smell to it.

We're not crusing until March 2007 so hopefully it will be aired out
by then :-)

What kind of compensation did you get for the Star being out of
commission after the fire ?

We got a full refund plus 25% off a future cruise.
At the time we had to scramble to find a comparable cruise the same week we
were scheduled to go on the Star. Plus, we didn't know if/when Princess
would cancel our week until 7 days before the sailing date. We were worried
with all of the cancellations that we would have trouble but luckily we
found something almost identical on RCL. The only drawback is that we were
not able to book any excursions in advance and had to pick what was
available on board. We were very pleased with RCL and hope to take Princess
up on the 25% off soon.

We toured the Star Princess, in Los Angeles, when it was new &, when we
spotted the balcony cabins on Emerald deck, remarked that we'd never
want to stay in one of them. Lesson: never say never!

Fast forward a couple of months & we were upgraded (from the lowest
category inside) to a BE category (either E206 or E208--don't remember
exactly) for a coastal cruise.

Liked the cabin very much & privacy wasn't an issue. The balcony is
huge & totally covered. They are elevated nearly 6 feet above the
promenade, so most people would need to stand on tip-toe to look in.
The balcony glass & door glass have mirrored film coatings which aided
privacy. There was, as I recall, much less traffic on the promenade
than we had anticipated as well.

Given that most of the balconies on the Grand Class ships have little to
no privacy from above (particularly the mini suites on Dolphin deck), I
wouldn't hesitate to book an Emerald deck, balcony cabin.

Jay---doesn't go nekkid on the balcony anyway...much!

"Thanks" Jay,

That's exactly the information we needed to help us make our decision.
We're going for it !!!

We dreaded having one of these cabins, BUT, once we boarded, we ended
up loving it! We loved the shade and even enjoyed conversing with the
passing passengers Here's a link to what I said on my web site:
