is middle of the price range, is not full of families with kids, and does
not require you to dress in DJ or tuxedo for dinner most nights.

I'd accept having to dress up for one night (captains invitation etc) but
rest of time I'd want to be smart casual.

Or Azamara which may be slightly lower priced. I'd say you would have
to do either Oceania or Azamara to meet his dress and minimal families
with kids desires. But he might not consider those lines in the middle
price range.

In the "middle of the price range", you are talking mass market and all of
those lines attract families.

But when you go can have a big difference. Cruise the first two weeks of
November, the first two weeks of December and the first two weeks of
January.... and the second and third week of September. These weeks are
right before or after major school holidays... or right after school opens.
Parents are less likely to take their kids out of school these weeks.

Princess has open dining... you never have to get dressed up if you want.
NCL also has an open dining concept. I think Princess offers a better value
but YMMV.

Most of the middle of the road cruise lines don't "make" you dress up
anymore. I am a pretty casual guy myself and my uniform on cruises has
been Dockers and a polo shirt. So far I have fit in pretty well on
Princess, HAL, NCL, RCL and Carnival. I normally just take a sport coat
and tie for the "formal" night and nobody has even noticed.

As far as kids is concerned, George already gave you probably the best
tip ... timing!

Aside from the other advice given in this thread alrady, you should
consider 10 day or longer cruises when school is in session.
Repositioning cruises attract fewer families because airfare is a bit
tricky since you fly to one city and home from another.

What price would I be looking at for a 7 night cruise. Outside twin standard
cabin. Not on the bottom accommodation deck. It will give me an idea if
Oceania is in my price range or if I need to look lower.

That's certainly two to think about. How do they compare price wise to

I suppose now would be a good time to say why I asked the original question.
My dad had been asked if he'd consider going on a cruise with Saga Cruises.
They are a British holiday company that specialise in the over 50s age
group; so no families and prices are a bit high but not extortionate. The
one thing that has put him off booking a Saga cruise is that on a 7 night
cruise, as well as the captains cocktail party, there are at least 3 other
"formal" dining evenings where you are expected to wear a DJ at least.

Saga have been ruled out but he is interested in going on a cruise if he can
find one suitable.

I can't find an Ocean cruise that's seven days. And the cheapest 10
day was 2300.00 PP for the first two occupants Outside cabin, not
Balcony

NCL and Princess range from 850-1900 PP for the first two occupants on
a seven day, Balcony cabin.
