Default Extend F-1 visa thru INS

Hi people! I have some question regarding F-1 visa. Is it true that
we could extend F-1 visa thru the INS? If it's true, what is the
requirement to extend it? Also, if my F-1 visa already expired, I
don't need to renew it as long as I stay in the US, right?

I have another question. One of my friends, which is an international
student, did a misdemeanor and he already paid the fine. Now, his F-1
visa expired and he also wants to extend it. Is it ok for him to
extend it thru the INS? or the INS is going to kick him out from the
US because he did a misdemeanor? Thank you so much for the help(s).

Nicole, this is definitely not the place to ask student visa question. BTW
the INS no longer exists. It is now called the BCIS (Bureau of Citizenship
and Immigration Services. Its web site is:
http://www.bcis.gov/graphics/index.htm.

You need to direct your questions to them or to the foreign students office
at your university.

First, you need to understand the difference between F-1 visa and F-1
status.

You can extend an F-1 status in the US. This has to be done before the F-1
status expires (which can be easy because often, the F-1 status doesn't
expire at a specific date in the first place).

You cannot extend an F-1 visa in the US, nor is there a need to do that
(unless you plan to travel internationally).

I have another question. One of my friends, which is an international

It depends very much on the nature of the event and a lot of other
factors. He should consult with a competent immigration attorney who
understands the impact of criminal law.
