Perth - Exmouth self drive
Hello travelers and locals!
I plan to visit Australia in September - October. I plan to dive on GBR and after that I'd like to fly to Western Australia I have a few questions: Is it a good time to visit WA? I mean weather and number of tourists. Is it worth it to drive from Perth to Exmouth or vise versa? Will 5 days be enough? Is it possible to fly to Exmouth from Cairns? Or I have to fly to Perth? Is there a good diving in the first week of October? I'd like to see manta rays. I apologise if it looks like a bunch of chaotic questions - there is so much to see Down Under but so little time! Thanks in advance - I appreciate your suggestions! Pit. |

Perth - Exmouth self drive
We drove from Darwin to Perth about 8 years ago and stopped in Exmouth. We
did diving, and it was fun, but we didn't see anything special. On the way to Exmouth, make sure you stop in Monkey Mia -- it was really quite interesting, and not as touristy as we'd thought it might be. Also, when we were in Monkey Mia, they had a catamaran sailboat that took people out for an evening cruise and that really was great! We were there in July, so I don't know what's going on in the springtime. One more thing: if you are interested, there is a special solar observatory in Exmouth and we got in to see it. It's one of several in the world that CONSTANTLY looks at the sun [well, obviously, not at night] -- if you're into that, just stop in; they didn't have any tours, but were happy to show us around. 5 days from Perth to Exmouth should be adequate! One more thing: we had a camper, and we camped out up on top of the hill where the lighthouse is in Exmouth, and the views were fantastic! No one stopped us, so I guess it's ok. My first trip up to Ningaloo was in September. I think it's a bit early for mantas, but there's still plenty of good diving in Coral Bay and around the Muiron islands. Don't forget there's also plenty of good diving south like the wreck of the HMAS Swan in Dunsborough. Water will be a little cold though. http://www.northwestregional.com.au/ are probably your only way of flying to Exmouth from Broome. It's hard to tell from the website if they still fly that route. They gave me a full body 3mm wetsuit in Coral Bay, but I didn't think it was warm enough. In Exmouth I wore an additional jacket over the top. If you're planning to dive either Rottnest or Dunsborough at that time of year, you'll need a 2 piece 5mm at least. It's about 19C down there.
