SAIGON cheapest way to get there?

Hi, I'm in Los Angeles, thinking about going to Saigon. Had the idea of
traveling by boat?
Would I be able to get on an non-commercial ship, maybe in exchange of work?

There are people who work on sail boats in exchange for steerage. I guess
they hang out at mariners and wait for work.
