Default 4WD Rental Car in NZ

We will be in the south island for three weeks in September for a skiing
holiday and wanting to hire a larger type 4WD that can fit 3 adults and 2
teenagers (not a squeezy Subaru).

Can anyone recommend a suitable hire company.

We plan to travel from Queenstown though to Christchurch during our time
there.

Whay a 4wd - I think most areas are 2wd accessible.

You might consider a campervan...

I'd also question a 4WD - the hire car companies in NZ are very unlikely to
let you loose on some of the "hairiest" roads on the South Island anyway,
whether in a 2 or 4 WD. Three or four years ago we hired from Ace, although
their vehicles weren't new they were in very good condition, and represented
very good value for money compared with the big multinationals. You'd
probably be better off with a people mover category vehicle for your crowd
plus luggage.
