There are many places that rent them. People visiting Bonaire tend to snorkel or dive (or windsurf). There really isn't all that much else to do. What I did on St. Kitts was just before I started writing trip reports. But by following my pictures here you can see what I did: http://donwiss.com/pictures/St-Kitts-2000/ Especially on St. Kitts you will be met by a swarm of taxi drivers hanging out in the Circus. Since I was there they turned the sugar cane train into a tourist train. So that is something you should investigate. And of course Brimstone on St. Kitts is the premier tourist attraction. The problem with the flamingo sanctuary is it is in the middle of the salt ponds and you aren't allowed to get near it. If you bring a telescope there is the Willemstoren lighthouse you can use it from. Don www.donwiss.com/pictures/carib (e-mail link at page bottoms). |

Saint Kitts' has a sister island called Nevis that many cruise
passengers from St. Kitts' port visit for the day. It is a nice change of pace from the "normal" hectic ports of call....no people trying to sell you anything, no Burger Kings, etc. Just the Caribbean the way it USED to be before American Commercialism See my website at www.nevis1.com and see if it interests you. Bonaire Rent a car or truck from Budget (email me for details) and drive all over. My suggested route is heading south along the coastal road to see Cargil, the oldest privately owned US company mining salt for cooking, water softener and commercial uses. Observe the salt pans with pretty pink water..head south and see the majestic coastline. Snorkel at one of our MANY shore sites. Stop at the slave huts for a great photo op. Have drinks at Sorobon, our windsurf area. There are two places to eat and drink side by side. Take a lesson at one of the world's best beginner spots. There are two first class shops. Head to town and drive north towards Rincon the oldest town. On the way out stop at Onima to see the Indian drawings and the wild East coast. Go land sailing, fast and fun. There is a new track before Onima. Head into Rincon and have drinks or local food at Rose Inn. Need more ideas? Email me at This is a nature island..not much shopping but great sites.. |

"Not much else" You never saw the real Bonaire....
Caving, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, mountain biking, spelunking, dining, parasailing, water taxi to Klein Bonaire to see turtles, hiking up Branderis or at Dos Pos, beachcombing at Baby Beach...sigh..(head shaking)..oh yes, we have donkeys and flamingos too. There is no problem seeing the flamingos. They are up close and
personal at Gotomeer north near BOPEC. I have many photos w/o a telescopic lens. The ones at Peklemeer near the southern point are indeed far inland. Near Sorobon there are more.
