You should try HAL, George...only one night with a song and Baked
Alaska parade, unlike the nightly ordeal on Carnival.

I agree with George. I prefer my waitstaff to wait tables, not sing
and dance.

Sheesh... I am beginning to sound like a curmudgeon.

I'm not old enough to go on HAL... but I'm getting close.

It doesn't cost anything to look. You walk through looking at your
feet? How do you avoid crashing into other passengers?

I just walk through the art displays - paying attention to where I'm
going, not paying much attention to the art they're selling. But, I
never found the art displays to be offensive or in the way of my
forward progress. Heck, I could go to the Museum of Modern Art in NYC
and find things I'd be hard pressed to call art, but I don't divert my
eyes...

You get 2 or maybe 4 people in minimum rooms run up to the Lido in the

What do you mean by minimum rooms? Are you implying that folks with
inside cabins shouldn't have equal access to tables on the Lido deck?

Really, I don't see anything wrong with a group of people using a Lido
(poolside) table for the day...if they're actually at the table and
using it. I don't remember seeing or hearing about any restrictions on
this. I usually just use those tables for short periods of time, but I
remember one cruise I was on, where I did spend hours at a table, with
a group of people who came and went. The band playing on deck took
their breaks at "our" table, so it was especially crowded then, and
then thinned out a bit, when they went back on, to play. We weren't
"saving" the table, by leaving books and bags on all the empty chairs,
but we did monopolize the space for an entire afternoon at
sea....didnt realize this went against cruise etiquette.

My pet peeve: (and I guess this is minor to others) Not dressing for formal
nights. We see people being admitted to the dining room in Dockers and
pull-over shirts. No jacket, no tie, no nothing.

Mine would have to be those who hog chairs with towels and then you

I am concerned if you aren't in the chair for about 15 minutes or no
family member is right there the chairs are fair game. What do you
guys think?

1) Being assigned beach towels and being held responsible for their
return (Carnival). Much prefer HAL's towel policy - take as many as
you wish, dump the dirties in the bin. No one knows how many you have
- no one seems to care. Honor system....lovely.

2) Singing and dancing waiters.

Plus many other items listed (bingo announcements, gambling ding-ding-
ding, customers artificially holding chairs & tables, kids in hot
tubs, pesky photographers...

And so on.

Since these tend to be the things that irritate many of the readers
here, who can suggest the names of cruise lines that don't have most
of these problems?

For me, I find that HAL has the fewest on my list of annoyances. The
slot machine noise will be found on any ship with a casino. The saving
of seats in the theater, or chaises on deck will also be found on any
mass market line. HAL tends to attract fewer kids, so one would hope
that there would be fewer kids in the hot tubs. Disney might be best
for keeping kids out of hot tubs, since they seem to do a really good
job of keeping the kids busy with planned activities that don't
involve them being in the adult spaces. I've found the photographers
to be annoying on all ships I've been on, all the lines...and their
pushiness seems to be getting worse...or maybe I've just become more
sensitive to it. I can't say I've ever been bothered by announcements
over the PA - I try to listen to the captain's address (at noon?) but
other than that, I don't really hear, or listen for the announcements.

One time (on Carnival, I believe), there were pool games happening,
midships. I was lounging by the aft pool - intentionally picked that
space for a more quiet environment for reading and napping, and to be
away from the planned poolside activities. While the belly flop
contest (and hairy chest, and etc.) were going on, actually piped in
the CD's microphone to the aft pool area, so even though we weren't
anywhere near the where the noise was being generated, we were forced
to either listen to it, or head inside. Now, THAT was annoying.

I'm only 50 and I enjoyed my one cruise on HAL. Enough that we are
looking at booking another one soon on the Westerdam.
It's a little sleepy at night but I just go to bed earlier, about midnight.

Depends on what kind of cruise I'm looking for, a relaxing one, or a
more active one.
