A chartered engineer (or even a Chartered Engineer)? This must be Europe
you're talking about, where credentialism rules.

There is a similar thing inthe US and the Us has signed up to several
international agreements on Professional status and credentials

The idea that they haven't heard of UNIX is laughable.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people working in IT who haven't heard of
UNIX.

That is true. :-(

I regularly meet people in IT who think that there are no mainframes,
even tough 75% of business data processing in the world is carried out by
mainframes.

Try talking to them about embedded systems which makes you the largest
section of processors in the world... up until 5 years ago an 8051 8 bit
MCU made up 1 in three processors on the planet.

They don't know any more about embedded systems than they know about
mainframes, which is to say nothing at all.

I know that embedded systems exist, and they do not, so, clearly, I know more
than they do about it.

Since we are discussing embedded systems, I cannot be ignorant of their
existence, which invalidates your assertion.

You said I didn't know anything, which is manifestly untrue if I know about
embedded systems.

Pointing out serious mistakes doesn't count as pedantry.

If you really must engage in personal attacks on other people, it would be
best to choose your own words with great care. Personal attacks in general do
not impress, but even among the minority of unintelligent people who find such
attacks impressive, glaring mistakes tend to greatly diminish their impact.
