Default Need help with itinerary in Central America

I just got tickets to Managua, Nicaragua (NewarkMiamiManagua) using
my A.A. frequent flyer miles, departing on February 5th. and will be
away for about 3 weeks.

I also plan to visit Teguciglpa, Honduras and San Salvador, El
Salvador and was thinking about using Ticabus but I saw that Grupo Taca
airlines has some decent fares (ManaguaTeguciglpa for about $150 round
trip). I'm wondering if there's a way to get to these various
destinations without having to return to Managua at the end of my
vacation because of my A.A. frequent flyer tickets.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sy

Being that I have to depart from Managua at the end of my vacation
because of my A.A.

Are you planning on traveling around Honduras? If so, I guess Teguc. is an
OK place to start from. But, if it were me (and the air fare was comparable)
I'd fly to San Pedro Sula where you can hop a bus to Copan, Tela, La Ceiba
and a quick flight out to the Bay Islands. Tegucigalpa isn't much of a
destination in my opinion.

Keep in mind that Taca sucks. Taking the bus is often faster and usually
more pleasant. If I can't afford anything better than Taca, I take the
bus.

I just flew TACA from San Pedro Sula to San Salvador over the
holidays. Compared to my last two flights on American carriers
(Continental and American) TACA was exceptional. Check in clerks that
were polite and helpful. The flight to San Salvador was on an Airbus
A319 and the return was on an Airbus A320. More leg room then on the
American carriers, more comfortable seats, cabin attendants that were
100 times more polite and helpful then their American counterparts. No
problems with luggage at all.

40 minute flight time from SPS to San Salvador - the bus often is not
faster. In fact, the worst part of the trip was the bus home from the
airport - we were left stranded on the highway halfway between San
Pedro Sula and Siguatepeque when the El Rey Express bus dropped the
transmission. El Rey has also been overbooking their busses, they've
been leaving ahead of schedule stranding passengers in San Pedro Sula.
Honduran friends showed up at 5 p.m. with confirmed tickets on El Rey
for the 5:30 bus. It had already left (left at 4:50pm.), the 6:30 bus,
last one of the night, was sold out. They ended up in the San Pedro
Police station for the evening sleeping on a sofa an office. So much
for busses. Family has taken the buss and on two occassions the bus
has had mechanical failures , on other occasions, they were supposedly
given confirmed seats on the 9:30 bus only to find out the seats had
been resold to other passengers.

Every one has had negative experienes on a variety of transportation.
My worst experiences are with busses. My best transportation
experiences have been with TACA and their in country subsidiary,
Islena.

I'm glad to hear that TACA pleases someone. If they always work the way
I've seen them, they'd be broke. I'll spare you my TACA horror stories
and merely agree with your comment that "Every one has had negative
experienes on a variety of transportation". And your mileage may vary.

Most of the people I know here fly TACA back to the US or
interregional. They don't use American or Continental because of the
negative experiences on both American carriers - mostly damaged or
stolen luggage but also because of equipment malfunctions (stuck
baggage compartment doors)which resulted in not clearing customs in
time to make connections. This was compounded by the airline failing
to admit it was their problem that caused missed connections and
demanding new tickets be purchased for another connecting flight.

One other comment on the bus lines - Hedman Alas in particular They
dropped one of my co-workers off in the middle of nowhere at 6 in the
morning after failing to stop at the scheduled bus stop in
Siguatepeque - just dumped him and his luggage on the roadside about
10 miles out of town.
