Default Ottoman history book?

Hello, I am travelling to Istanbul for two weeks in April after being
inspired by John Jules Norwich's three volume history on the Byzantine
Empire. I look forward to seeing the relics of that age in person. I
got turned on to Norwich after a recommendation for his Venice book
that accompanied me to that detection, a recommendation I got on this
group.

What do you recommend in the way of Ottoman history books that would
improve my experience in Istanbul? I particularly like the
"lay-history, but depthful" approach Norwich takes.

Thanks in advance,

Maybe, but even if he did, did he sit on my granny's Ottoman? I knew it
was old but I had no idea it was the subject of a history book!

I don't think that would be particularly useful to the OP - while a
classic of its kind, it's a (to say the least) rather partial account of a
very brief period of history at the end of the Ottoman Empire (the time
around the First World War), and IIRC none of it actually takes place
anywhere near Istanbul.

Having said that, I don't have a suggestion myself - though Penguin's
histories are usually good. The OP might also consult the bibliography of
the Norwich volumes if there is one (obvious, I know, but easily
overlooked!).

Maybe out of print, but try "Turkey - A Short History" by Roderic H
Davison (Eothen Press, Beverley UK ) ISBN 0 9067 19 03 8

"Istanbul - Memories of a City" by Orhan Pamuk (London: Faber & Faber
2005) ISBN 978 0 571 21833 2
