I wonder why so many Americans expect to be able to use their own currency when they visit overseas countries. Everyone else accepts that they will need to obtain local currency when they travel. US Dollars are the currency of the United States, and Thailand is not part of the US. You need to obtain Thai Baht to spend when you're in Thailand. As others have suggested, use an ATM card to get local currency, or change your money at a foreign exchange dealer. Chris- Because US currency is used in other countries too. For example, when I was in Cambodia they take US dollars. Several countries peg their currencies to the US dollar. And of course closer to the US, dollars can be used in both Canada and Mexico. |

Cambodia (and Timor Leste, where it's the official currency) are rare exceptions. I have never used US dollars in Canada. I occasionally used CAD in the US though, mostly for "loonie nights" in Buffalo bars! Cheers, George W Russell Bangalore |

Cambodia is certainly something of an exception, but even there you'll end up paying more for things if you use US$ because prices get rounded up to the nearest US$1. In the vast majority of countries the most sensible thing to do is carry the local currency. I've seen many visitors from the US here in Manila trying to pay for things in US currency and being quite disconcerted when their money isn't readily accepted. Visiting US military forces are normally the worst culprits. It always seems to smack of a kind of imperialist attitude to me. Chris |
