catalyzer is supposed to efficiently reduce the emissions of carbon
dioxide

Did you do chemistry at school ?

Oil based fuels are hydrocarbons, basically a mixture of carbon & hydrogen.
When they burn perfectly the carbon becomes carbon dioxide and the hydrogen
become water.

If it doesn't burn perfectly that carbon produces carbon monoxide. Other
****ty constituents in the fuel, like sulphur produces other noxious
products.

There isn't anything you can do about creating that carbon dioxide, that's
the best you can hope for. This happens with perfect clean combustion.

Oh, I didn't do chemistry at school ;-)

Now look at my photographs and maps of Asia at www.peteloud.co.uk

Cheers,

Pete Loud

Diesel vehicles cause pollution, but petrol vehicles with a catalyser
filter have almost zero pollution.

It all depends on what you regard as pollution.

Even perfectly setup diesel and petrol engines chuck out vast amounts of
carbon dioxide. That's what happens when you burn oil based fuels, even
clean oil. Carbon dioxide is what's supposed to be causing global

warming.
I
regard that carbon dioxide as pollutant.

I thought that this meant to a Asia travel newsgroup :-(

When the engine is warm, the catalyzer is supposed to efficiently reduce

the
emissions of carbon dioxide. It is all different when one starts an engine
which has been idle for hours or days in subzero temperatures. Car must be
driven a few kilometers until the catalyzer begins to filter decently.
Naturally there are heating systems (typically electric) which keep

engines
warm as if it was summer when outdoor temperatures are low as in Siberia.
This also improves the odds to ignite the engine in the first place (if
there is any life in car's battery, cold much discharge batteries).

I obviously missed you somewhere.

Now I can see the light. Yes, I was totally wrong with the substance. I had
primarily those hydrocarbons in mind.

"Alfred Molon" erred...

Even allowing for the previously posted corrections - a cat only begins to
function properly when sufficiently warm (and the lag increases with age) -
up until then it is actually _worse_ than a non-catted old-style engine.
Short hops in your car don't get things properly heated, so around town they
are not doing a lot of good at all!

In article ,
says...

carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide is not pollution.

Alfred,

You'd do better sticking to photography which you do very well, than trying
to be an expert on pollution from vehicles.

Cheers,

Not 65,000 - but a few dozen photos of Asia & Europe, but they're good ;-)
.. . . . . Oh, and loads of great maps of Asia
