London Theatre - Proper Dress
My wife and I will be in London in June for a week long getaway. We
are thinking of attending The Phantom of the Opera while there. She would like to know what would be the appropriate dress for a tourist at the show. Also, would slacks, shirt and coat be appropriate for me? Thanks in advance! |

From shorts and flip flops to suits. I think decent and casual is the mode these days. No one wears evening gowns and tiaras. I dress decent but I never dress up. Business casual is about as fancy as it gets. |

... slacks, We call those chinos or casual trousers, although we used to use the word 'slacks' in the 50s/60s. coat Here, that's a jacket. In the UK, a coat is an overcoat (although that would probably be useful too!). trainers (running shoes, I forget what you call them) Sneakers I think, being a Seinfeld fan! ;-) Ian |

... Thanks everyone! I will try to update my language before we arrive. It's not a question of updating, merely, as Winston Churchill said, the situation of "two nations divided by a common language". I was merely giving you some hints. We're used to the way you 'folks' speak. ;-) Ian |
