Default Anyone Know of a Female Ship's Captain?

Hi Earl,

For your information:

CAPTAIN: is a RANK designation.

MASTER: is the position on the ship (commanding Officer, or the TOP person
in charge of the ship), usually the rank of a master is Captain or above,
but not necessarily.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

I am not aware of one working for Royal Caribbean but there
certainly may be one.

I believe RCI had a women Captain..in line for
master..but..she made the infortunate mistake of coming on
the bridge..in a skimpy outfit. Her career with RCI ended
as a result. So close...but one silly mistake in
judgment.and pow..it's all over.

Cruising is like being awake, and dreaming!

Pardon my ignorance,
but how could she be a Captain without having her Masters
Certificate???

Not really

A masters ticket in merchant marine is granted to officers who
have requisite experience and passed exam.

IE, on Titanic there were IIRC two mates who had Masters tickets
in addition to the Captain.

Similarly in (non passenger) ships the First Officer usually has
a Masters ticket. But the number of Captain slots is limited.

In 19th century warships the Captain was senior officer, ofter
with a Sailing Master to handle ship control, with a First Lt in
charge of weapons.

So it would appear that (on crusie ships alone) the Captain is
not in charge of the ship, it is a demoted rank here with the
Master in overall control. Crazy redefinition of a title held by
Commanding Officer for millenia.

Hi Earl,

Let me take a try at clearing this up. On all cruise lines that I am aware of,
all Masters are Captains, but not all Captains are Masters.
It is not at all unusal to have two, or more, Captains on a cruise ship, but
there is only ever one Master. Next time when you are no a cruise, listen at
the introductions. Usually, you will hear, "and now, the Master of the (fill
in the vessel), Captain Whatever his/her name".

I hope this helps, even if it is different from the Merchant service which you
are comparing it to.
