Public transport between Mt Etna & Taormina

We plan on climbing to the summit of Mt Etna. We will take a tour bus
as high as Terre Filosofo; however the bus will leave while we climb to
the summit. From the summit we plan to hike down to Rifugio Sapienza.
From Sapienza I understand there is a late afternoon bus that goes to
Catania; however we want to go north instead, to Taormina. Does anyone
know the route of this bus; does it stop in a town on the east side of
Etna, from where we could get some other public transport to Taormina?

Can't directly help with your question, but if you do have to go to Catania
you should have no problem getting a train from there to Taormina. A check
on the Italian railways website - www.trenitalia.com - for today shows five
trains leaving Catania between 1740 (5.40 p.m.) and 2035 (8.35), with
journey times between 40 and 54 minutes.
