Default Does Forte Posthouse Still Exist

Hi,

I was starting to research hotels in England and I couldn't find a web
site for the Forte Posthouse chain; I stayed at a couple of their
locations back in the '90s. Does the chain still exist?

Not for years

They were taken over in a peculiarly nasty hostile takeover about ten years
ago and the group was asset stripped.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

Who made the takeover bid? The Posthouse near Gatwick Airport looks
like it's become a Holiday Inn. Did all the poshouses become Holiday
Inns or were they absorbed by different chains?

The 'Granada Group', an outfit that ran a particularly nasty selection of
motorway service stations did the dirty deed. They owned a very profitable
TV station that was used as equity to finance the deal.

Rocco Forte is still in the hotel business. Brown's Hotel in London is the
only UK hotel he owns these days.Granada sold the buildings to a selection
of hotel chains, most of which have been sold on a couple of times since.

None are as good as they were, but they are all much more expensive.

It is arguable that the destruction of Forte Hotels was the start of the
fall in standards of medium quality hotels in the UK. Before they were run
by people who wanted to run hotels, now they're run by accountants.

The Forte group, including the Posthouse hotels, was taken over by
Granada (headed by Gerry Robinson) in 1996. By that time, Forte had
taken the Posthouse brand down-market, and standards had fallen
considerably in my experience.

Since then, the history has been complicated. Granada merged with the
Compass Group in 2000, then demerged all of its hospitality businesses
as Compass in February 2001.

Meanwhile the brewing group Bass had acquired Holiday Inn in 1988-90.
With the sale of the Bass brewing business, the company was renamed as
Six Continents in 2000.

In 2001 Compass sold off all 79 Posthouse hotels to Six Continents, and
most were upgraded to Holiday Inns. The hotels side of Six Continents
became InterContinental Hotels Group in 2003.

He also has the Lowry in Manchester.

Forte was an evil piece of ****. One of the largest corporate donors
to the Tory Party in the Thatcher era. He wanted to cut his workers'
wages and rights as near to the point of slavery as he could, so he
bought himself a government to do it.

Holiday Inn cannot possibly be any worse.

A slightly biased view.
