'French Youths' torch hundreds of Citroens, Volkswagons and Fiats overnight

Youths set fire to about 400 cars overnight and police said they
arrested more than 250 people, as violence marred France's New Year
celebrations.

However, a police spokesman said there were fewer problems than in
2005, when youths attacked trains in the Paris region and southeast of
the country.

25,000 police were on duty throughout the country during the night,
including 4500 in Paris, where the authorities banned fireworks and
firecrackers.

Police said that they had arrested 258 people nationwide by early
morning, including two children aged eight and 10 who set fire to
dustbins in the eastern city of Strasbourg.

Three children aged between 10 and 12 were arrested in a Paris suburb
after they were caught carrying cans of petrol.

No big deal, happens frequently. Automobile arson is common in
France. Some of the banlieue burnings are hired jobs by
people who don't know how to get rid of their old wrecks
and collect insurance too.

The big deal would be is people were killed.

The French get more worked up about human deaths than
physical damage, sort of at opposite to that in the USA.

To update a bit, Le Parisien this morning had an artilce on page
12, the headline of which is that "Violence en baisse pour la
St-Sylvestre", mean that the violence in general was lower
than last year.

With regard to car burnings, a part of one article dealt with
"Les escrocs aux assurances inspiré" and that some people
are having their old cars torched. One racket even for newer
models it to buy them out of the country where the prices
are lower, bring them in and torching them in France after
insured.

You've got a real short attention span there perfesser. Your sloppy
translation of the headline in le Parisen which you claim to have
quoted said "Violence en baisse pour la
St-Sylvestre", and you say "mean(s) that the violence in general was
lower
than last year." It doesn't say that at all. In ENGLISH it says "New
Year's eve violence drops" We all know that you don't speak any French,
when you make a simple attempt people recognize you for ,the simple old
fool that you are.
