cycling in Asia
Hi,
A plan is forming which won't come to fruition until 2010, but I want to start planning now. I tour a lot on a bicycle, but so far only in Europe. It's always been my dream to see Thailand and Viet-Nam, and looking at a map as I write these words, I'm thinking: do the eastern coast of Viet-Nam, Hanoi -- Ho Chi Minh -- Phnum -- Bangkok. Just checking flights, and I suppose there won't be much change out of a thousand euros. But the thing I can't find out is the mileage involved, as google maps refuses to calculate distances in SE Asia. So could someone tell me how many miles we're talking for the above trip, and if it's doable by a cyclist (read: a sane cyclist)? What's terrain like? Weather? When to go? And so on... Thanks. lv -- le_voyageur_en_velo |

Can't remember exactly where, but I have already seen western tourists cycling across SE Asia. The trip you are planning to do is certainly doable. The terrain is mostly flat with few mountains to cross. Best time to go is the winter (November to March), which is dry and (relatively) cool. The total length of your trip (Hanoi along the coast to Saigon, then to Phnom Penh, then to Bangkok passing by Siem Reap and Poipet) should be around 3000km. -- Alfred Molon http://www.molon.de - Photos of Asia, Africa and Europe |

There are several budegt tours that do this with smallish groups.
You might check their detailed itineraries and copy or join them [they are inexpensive and you have ready-made companions]. Look at Explore!, Imaginative Traveler and Intrepid for starters. -- Remove -NOSPAM- to contact me. |
