Default Sri Lanka in November

I know that there is a monsoon season in Sri Lanka during Dec - Jan but in
reality terms what does that mean? Does it rain constantly? does it rain for
a few minutes at a time but really heavily? Does it rain every day? Is the
rain mainly at night?
What's the weather like when it's not raining?
The end of Nov is the only time I could get away and I know there's not a
lot to do in SL when it IS raining so I'm reluctant to arrange a trip
without knowing what to expect weather wise

I was there in December [when the tsunami struck]. Rain was not an issue:
canceled one bicycle ride, made the climb on Sigiriya much more interesting.
Weather was otherwise warm, humid, tropical.

How safe is the country at the moment?

There have been areas that were "off limits" for years. Outside of those
[non-touristy] areas, I detected little reason for concern. Perhaps
somewhat more aggressive third-world hucksterism ["the train is not running
today, you need to take my cab"] but nothing unusual. The situation has
changed recently, of course, but the risk to tourists is probably acceptably
low. If the connection from Hawaii were better, I'd go again without any
safety concerns. Sri Lanka is a tragic, beautiful country.

As safe as almost anywhere else. I came back (to the UK) on Monday after 15
days there. In 2 days in Colombo, 3 in Yala - no problems. You never go
anywhere if you only go places "safe" - then die at home from boredom!
